Overview on How to Become a Pilot in India

To become a pilot in India after the 12th grade, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria. A Science background with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) is essential. Following the 12th, aspiring pilots can enroll in undergraduate aviation courses in reputable colleges. Additionally, clearing the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) tests is mandatory for those interested in becoming pilots through Indian Air Force-equivalent exams such as NDA, AFCAT, and others. These exams play a pivotal role in assessing and selecting candidates for pilot training. Overall, a combination of educational qualifications, specialized training, and successful exam outcomes is crucial for pursuing a career in aviation.
For most commercial pilots, this is a dream career.

Minimum Requirements To
Enroll For CPL Training

  • Candidates must demonstrate a proficient understanding, reading, and writing capability in English to pursue the CPL course successfully.
  • Minimum age for CPL issuance is 18 years.
  • Eligible for enrollment in the Pilot training program at 17 years, allowing one year to complete the pilot course and submit documents for the issuance of a Commercial Pilot License.
  • Successful completion of 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics or an equivalent Diploma.

Medical Fitness For Pilot Training

We need to be 100% sure that you are medically fit to fly before you invest your money in a pilot course as it's a mandatory requirement. The medicals are a 2 step process.
Class 2 medicals :
  • It can be carried out throughout India with doctors appointed by DGCA. Post completion you will be handed a CA - 35 assessment form as fitness certification and your reports will be sent to the office of DGCA for the issue of medical assessment later on you receive a final medical assessment from DGCA.
Class 1 medicals :
  • Class 1 initial medical assessment can be carried out in only 5 cities (Mumbai, Banglore, Delhi, Chennai and Johrat) . Class 1 medical assessment date can only be requested post receiving class 2 assessment from DGCA.
File Number :
  • Will get issued along with your class 2 assessment and will be mentioned on the class 2 assessment for your reference. This is a permanent and unique file number issued to each individual and all your documents sent to DGCA will be housed in relation to this file number

10th and 12th Board verification certificate

Issued by the education board, this certificate ensures accurate marks. Essential for CPL, it's hassle-free online for CBSE, with varying processes for different boards.

Class II medicals

Preliminary for PPL, this DGCA-mandated medical is required before applying for a Class I. Conducted by DGCA-listed doctors, it includes tests and health checks.

Class I medicals

Final step for CPL, following successful Class II verification. Conducted at Air force centers or specified private hospitals listed on DGCA's website.

Police Verification Certificate

Essential character certificate, needed for visas and CPL. Issued by local police, with some states offering an online application.

Computer Number

Vital DGCA-issued ID for pilots, crucial for CPL processes. Requires a Board Verification Certificate and takes 1-2 months.

Ground Classes

Mandatory CPL subjects include Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Technical General, Technical Specific, Air Navigation, and Radio Telephony (RTR). Ensures a strong foundation.

Visa Medicals

Required by certain countries for visa approval. Unrelated to DGCA, check the specific country's visa issuing website for details.

Visa Applications

Issued post-visa medicals and document submission. Typically, student visas are applied for flight training abroad, with varying application processes.

SPL (Student Pilot's License)

Preliminary license preceding PPL and CPL. Includes oral exams on Air Regs, Air Nav, Aviation Meteorology, and Aircraft Technical.

FRTOL (Flight Radio Telephony Operator's License)

Mandatory for radio equipment handling on Indian aircraft. Non-restricted FRTOL is crucial for CPL, obtained through exams or conversion.

CPL (Commercial Pilot License)

Requires clearing 5 DGCA papers, 200 flying hours, and specific exams. Foundation for a full-time career as a Commercial Pilot.

License Conversion

After meeting prerequisites and submitting an online application to DGCA, the Commercial Pilot License is issued within a month if found satisfactory.
